Saturday, Third Week of Lent

‘Be Merciful’

But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me a sinner.” (Luke 18:13)

As a teenager, new driver and rabid reader, I made weekly trips to the downtown library. For some reason, I took pride in figuring out a system for avoiding paying for parking in the library lot.

I am not sure why I decided to tell my dad about my system, and to do so with such a degree of braggadocio to boot. But I did. I was surprised when he didn’t congratulate me, but simply said, “So you’re a thief,” and walked away.

Free in Christ, we’re no longer defined by our sins, but by the powerful presence of Christ within. But it’s also true that we’re still sinners, and as Jesus himself lets us know, we can’t forget it either. Nor can we forget about his mercy.

O God, be merciful to me a sinner.
